My first touring experience was playing the LULAC National Convention at Disney’s Epcot Center when I was sixteen, or so. I was a run away from home and while everyone in the band got a plane ticket, direct to Disney, I had to ride a Greyhound Bus using a ticket with a mismatched name so I wouldn’t get arrested and sent back to my parents. It was my first 29 hour and 45-minute bus ride for just another gig, and it set the tone. I now do my best to spend five months of every year on the road, traveling the globe, three months in Bushwick, New York City and three months in Downtown Los Angeles.
In 2013, the executive director of touring at Billboard, Ray Waddell, gave me a full pass to the Billboard™ Touring Conference and Awards after the conference was already sold out. His book The Business of Concert Touring and Promotion guided my early touring career and kept me and our teams safe on the road.
